Direct Support Advocate (DSA) - Lawrence Community Shelter

The Direct Support Advocate (DSA) at Lawrence Community Shelter provides essential support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The DSA offers compassionate assistance, addresses basic needs, and ensures a welcoming, safe environment for guests. By promoting inclusivity and collaborating with staff and external partners, the DSA plays a key role in the well-being and success of those served at the main facility.  ​

The Direct Support Advocate (DSA) at The Village provides crucial support to individuals experiencing homelessness, including those in outdoor settings. The DSA assists with basic needs, maintains safety, and fosters a welcoming environment for guests. This role requires working outdoors and collaborating with staff and external partners to ensure the success and well-being of those served at The Village.

Food Service Specialist

The Food Services Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the delivery and serving of meals to guests at Lawrence Community Shelter and The Village, a site operated by Lawrence Community Shelter. Reporting to the Food Services Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating and ensuring the timely delivery of three meals per day. The Food Services Specialist will work closely with staff, volunteers, and external partners to facilitate meal services efficiently and effectively.

Case Manager

Case Managers engage with individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or receiving services at the Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) or The Village. Using harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and housing-focused approaches; they help clients address immediate needs, overcome housing barriers, and achieve stable, sustainable housing. This role requires collaboration with internal staff and external service providers. We seek an organized, detail-oriented Case Manager with strong case planning, documentation, record-keeping, and teamwork skills.

General Maintenance Technician 

Under the Executive Director’s supervision, the General Maintenance Technician is responsible for the upkeep and basic maintenance of Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) facilities. This role involves performing repairs, light maintenance, and ensuring a safe and presentable environment for guests and staff. The technician addresses minor issues, handles preventative tasks, and assists with duties across LCS properties. Additionally, the position includes obtaining bids for larger tasks and coordinating with vendors as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, disabilities, chronic health conditions, mental illness, substance use disorders, or those identifying as veterans or LGBTQIA+.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements outlined below are essential for performing the duties of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities to meet these requirements:

  • Ability to travel to designated locations and perform tasks such as standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and climbing.

  • Proficient and safe operation of a motor vehicle to transport oneself, colleagues, guests, and supplies.

  • Physical capacity to operate office equipment, involving repetitive hand/arm movements.

  • Ability to lift, move, and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds for agency needs or events.

  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods and maintain mobility for up to 10 hours a day.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English; Spanish language skills are a plus.

Other Requirements

● Must be at least 21 years of age
● Must have a valid driver’s license and meet LCS’ auto insurance requirements.
● Must successfully pass pre-employment background screening
